CONVENTIONAL DETECTION METHODS
Finding termites can be difficult, yet knowing where they are located is important when deciding on the most effective solution. The conventional method is to simply tap on the wood with the back of a screwdriver, or to poke holes in walls or even pull them apart.

THERMAL IMAGING
Objects with a temperature above absolute zero (- 459° F) emit infrared radiation which is not visible to our naked eye. As an object heats up, it will radiate more and more energy from its surface. The technique for making this invisible radiation visible is called thermal imaging, and involves the use of sophisticated thermal imaging cameras.

HOW THERMAL IMAGING DETECTS TERMITES
Although termites are cold-blooded creatures, they can generate heat. Termites are hosts to bacteria which live in their guts. These bacteria help break down and digest cellulose, the preferred food of termites. It is this digestion and chemical reaction that generates heat.

Thermal imaging technology detects heat patterns. When termites invade buildings, the normal heat patterns of the walls, floors and roof change due the presence of termites. The thermal imaging camera records this change in heat pattern and indicates the exact location of any termite infestation.

A thermal imaging camera is extremely sensitive when used to detect relative temperatures of different areas of an object. It is able to detect temperature variations as small as 0.1 degrees centigrade.

When there is a termite infestation within a structure or its fittings, the termites change the ‘thermal profile’ of the infested object, for example a doorframe, by hollowing out the wood in places to create their galleries. Whilst this takes place beneath the surface of the wood and the damage done is not yet visible, it can be detected with thermal imaging technology.
